Several players from all over Indiana saw their stock rise with their performances at the Prep Baseball Report’s Open I.D. Showcase at Indiana Tech in Lafayette on Sunday. From top to bottom, the talent was strong, and there were a handful of players who emerged as prospects to pay close attention to in the coming year.
Jeff McNeely, a 6-foot-6, 190-pound RHP/1B from Lafayette Jefferson HS, was named the top overall prospect in the Class of 2009 after he displayed power to all fields and was 81-83 off the mound with a solid changeup.
Not far behind McNeely were Northrop RHP/3B Robert Geary, Homestead catcher Stryker Salyer, Valparaiso SS/OF Tyler Wilson, Austin LHP Eric Rigel and Avon catcher Dalton Jones.
On the mound, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound Geary (pictured right), was the event’s top pitching prospect – and No. 2 overall in the Class of 2009 – as he consistently pitched at 84-85 mph, touching 86, to go along with a late-breaking curve and sinking changeup. The left-handed Rigel opened a lot of eyes with an 81-84 mph fastball and sharp curveball. McNeely, with his projectable body and arm action, and Tipton RHP Evan Bowman were also impressive, among others.
The 5-11, 170-pound Wilson showcased a strong arm in the infield (76-81 mph) and outfield (84-86), along with good feet and range. Gapinski and Brady Clark from Center Grove HS also showed well in the infield. Nick DiMarco from Boone Grove HS was the top-rated 2009 outfielder and ran an event-best 7.01 60 time.
Catchers were a particularly strong group. Salyer (1.98), Jones (1.95) and South Ripley’s Jared Keck (1.93) all registered sub-2 pop times, and Chris Gapinski from John Adams HS wasn’t far behind with a 2.05 pop. But Salyer (pictured right) earned the top catching prospect with his all-around skill package.
Brendan Gallagher, a 6-5, 220-pound 1B/RHP from Bishop Dwenger, was one of the best hitters at the event, and Hamilton SE outfielder Austin Rieke also showed well.
In the Class of 2010, Phillip Kuhns (pictured left) from Kokomo HS earned the top overall junior prospect honors. The 5-10, 150-pound Kuhns showcased an extremely quick arm and an 84 mph fastball on the mound, was the class’s top-rated infielder and ran a 7.18 60.
Trailing closely behind Kuhns on the mound was 6-3, 160-pound RHP/1B Max Majchrzak from Lake Central HS, who displayed an 83 mph fastball, and Kokomo RHP Colton Summers.
Arneal Squibb, a 6-1 outfielder from Mishawaka HS, was the class’s top hitter and was strong in the field. McCutcheon OF/LHP Trey Fankhauser was the best outfielder in the Class of 2010 crop and ran a 7.11 60. Delta OF/RHP Parker Holsten, South Ripley INF/RHP Brian Thomas and Centerville catcher Brandon Ramsey all put forth strong performances as well.
And keep an eye on the development of Homestead OF/LHP Jordan Kinzer, Lake Central SS/RHP Cody Dykema and Snider 6-3 1B Grant Yoder, who were the top-ranked 2011 players at the event.
