The Prep Baseball Report’s Open I.D. Showcase on Jan. 17 featured an impressive list of prospects, many of whom elevated their status as players to pay close attention to in the coming months. The overall talent at the showcase was strong, especially the Class of 2011.
In the Class of 2010, RHP Tyler Shook not only posted a 6.85 60 time, but was the topped ranked senior pitcher at the event with his explosive arm, catcher Caleb Fenimore posted impressive arm strength which resulted in outstanding pop times, and RHP Evan Eyer is going to make some recruiting coordinator look like a genius when his athletic body and plus arm action develop the velocity.
A look at the top performers at the event:
Class of 2010 Top Overall Prospects:
1. Tyler Shook, RHP, Plymouth HS: The 6-foot-1, 200-pound right-hander is one of the best-kept secrets in the state. As the top Class of 2010 pitcher at the event, Shook (right) delivered an 84-85 mph fastball from a high ¾ arm slot. His 70 mph breaking ball is a legit out pitch. Shook showed that he should be one of the more coveted unsigned seniors in the state.2. Caleb Fenimore, C, Rushville HS: The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Fenimore showed that he is one of the best all-around catchers in the state. He displayed impressive top pop times of 1.87, 1.9 and 2.05 with throws on the bag, and solid arm strength (78 mph). Fenimore was also one of the top Class of 2010 hitters at the event, demonstrating polished swing mechanics with power potential and is a top-level student.
3. Evan Eyer, RHP, Lawrence North HS: The 6-foot-2, 180-pound right-hander opened eyes with an impressive bullpen session. With a plus arm action, Eyer has the makings to be a top-level arm. He topped out at 82 mph and showed feel for three pitches a 67 mph curveball with tilt and a plus 77 mph changeup. No doubt Eyer will be throwing much harder in the future.
4. Zachary Pfafman, OF, DeKalb HS: Pfafman is a long, athletically built 6-foot-1, 170-pound prospect with arm strength and upside. In the outfield he moves fluidly and had good carry on his 82-mph throws. At the plate, Pfafman featured a loose swing with potential pull power, he also ran a 7.3 60.
5. Taylor Glaze, LHP, Lafayette Central Catholic HS: The athletically built 6-foot-2, 195-pound left-hander features a big 12-to-6 curveball (67 mph) and sat at 80-81 mph with his fastball. With his frame and arm speed, he should see a velocity spike come spring.
6. Scott Windler, OF, Lafayette Central Catholic HS: The 6-foot-2, 195-pound outfielder was one of the top overall athletes at the event. Windler (right) ran a 7.22 60, and his athleticism also showed in the outfield, as he moved with fluidity and purpose. At the plate, he demonstrated a balanced swing with quick hands.7. Damon Allen, P-OF, Plymouth HS: The 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-hander showcased clean mechanics and an 82-84 mph fastball on a good plane. He also showed good feel for his breaking ball, which registered at 70 mph.
8. Brendan Bolander, SS, Brebeuf Jesuit HS: Bolander was the top defensive shortstop at the event, as he showed good arm strength (78 mph), and he moved fluidly with quick hands. Bolander also showed a balanced swing at the plate.
9. Craig Gerulski, OF, Avon HS: This 5-foot-10, 195-pound outfielder is a strong-bodied athlete who showcased raw pull power potential from the right side. Gerulski demonstrated an aggressive hitting approach and bat speed. He also showed a solid arm from the outfield (79 mph).
10. Joshua McQueary, RHP, Lafayette Jefferson HS: The 6-foot-2, 160-pound right-hander has a quick arm and good feel for three pitches. His fastball topped at 80 mph with arm side run while his 66 mph change had late fade.
Class of 2011 Top Overall Prospects:1. AJ Reed, LHP, Terre Haute South HS: The 6-foot-4, 228-pound left-hander has been winning varsity games since his freshman year. At the event, he showed exactly why: his 84-86 mph has life and his breaking ball has tight two-plane break. Reed has a quick arm and good mound presence.
2. Kyle Schwinghamer, OF, Forest Park HS: The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Schwinghamer is a strong-bodied athlete who has all the tools to be a top-level outfield. As the fastest prospect at the event (6.77), Schwinghamer demonstrated impressive arm strength (85 mph) from the outfield, to go along with a compact swing at the plate.
3. Craig Zupan, RHP, Avon HS: Completely unknown heading into the event, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound right-hander made a big name for himself, not only because of his size, but because of his long and loose arm action. Zupan topped out at 84 mph, smooth and easy. He also showed a sharp, late-breaking 77-79 mph slider.
4. Corey Colquitt, C, Cathedral HS: A well-rounded player, Colquitt does everything well on the field. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Colquitt has a smooth, mechanically sound, balanced right-handed swing at the plate. Defensively, he has a solid arm (76 mph) with good carry on his throws as a catcher.
5. Drew Rosbottom, RHP, Heritage Hills HS: On the mound, Rosbottom (right) topped out at 81 mph along with a sharp-biting 71 mph slider (out pitch). Rosbottom demonstrated arm strength (82 mph) from the outfield. At the plate he showed a powerful hitting approach with bat speed and power to all fields. 6. Brent Mulvihill, LHP, Terre Haute South HS: The 6-foot, 185-pound left-hander showcased clean mechanics, easy arm action, and an 80-82 mph fastball with more in the tank. He also showed good feel for his curve, which registered at 66 mph.
7. Damon Reel, 3B, Western HS: The 6-foot, 180-pound third baseman can flat-out pick it on the infield. Reel showed an advanced plate approach, as he hammered line drives to all fields. Relaxed and balanced, he demonstrated quick hands and allows the ball to travel deep in the zone.
8. Zac Niehaus, OF, Northview HS: This powerfully built 5-foot-11, 185-pound outfielder can flat-out rake. Niehaus was one of the event’s top hitters, as he showed a quick and explosive swing with a relaxed and balanced plate approach and power to all fields. He also ran a 7.07 60.
9. Jared Carr, RHP, Pendleton Heights HS: The athletically built 6-foot, 170-pound right-hander features an over the top delivery. Carr (right) repeats his delivery which sat at 81-82 mph with his fastball. With his arm speed and good direction, he should see a velocity spike this spring.10. James Jewell, C, Batesville HS: Jewell is a top-level receiver, as he demonstrated extremely soft hands, an advanced blocking ability and good footwork. An accurate thrower, his 2.09 pop times were on the bag. At the plate, Jewell has a quiet, mechanically sound and balanced line drive-producing swing.
10. Tirey Burch, P-SS, Heritage Hills HS: A versatile athlete, the 6-foot-2, 175-pound Burch can play both middle infield positions and pitch adeptly. On the mount, Burch possessed an 82 mph fastball and a 73 mph late breaking slider.
Class of 2012-2013 Top Overall Prospects:
1. Joey Perkins, IF, Brebeuf Jesuit HS, 2013: Strong and compact, the 5-foot-11, 170-pound Perkins (right) possesses legitimate pull power from the right side. Using his powerful lower half, the ball jumps off his bat. Defensively, he has excellent hands, moves well laterally and has a solid arm. 2. David Oliger, 3B, Brownsburg HS, 2012: With a lean, athletic frame and a quick arm, the 6-foot-3, 170-pound Oliger showed that he is one of the premier prospects in the class. Oliger displayed a quick and compact swing. Defensively, he showcased advanced infield actions, quick hands, sound footwork and solid arm strength.
3. Jake Mills, RHP, Cathedral HS, 2012: A physically strong 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-hander, Mills showed a lively 78 mph fastball, 67-72 mph curveball, and good feel for his 70 mph change. With continued development, Mills should see a velocity spike in the coming year.
3. Kyle Pitlick, OF, Castle HS, 2012: The 5-foot-8, 155-pound right-handed hitting outfielder ran a 6.86 60, and his athleticism also translated in the outfield. Pitlick also has a compact, line drive-producing swing at the plate.
